What is Videography?

The definition of Videography in the strictest sense is “The art or process of making video films using electronic media” , however over the years video itself is becoming all the more relevant and that strict definition does not do the common term videography, or exactly what a videographer does, justice. Being a Videographer nowadays includes both the process of filming as well as editing. As video becomes all the more prevalent in modern business with social media, the types of jobs and needs from clients is ever-evolving. Promos, commercials, event advertisements, how-to , wedding , giveaways , training, music, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. When a video job comes through the door, you never know exactly what kind of job you going to get, and that requires you to be flexible and well structured to be prepared to handle any job.

Why is it Important?

Social media is quickly becoming the go to way for companies to promote their business and events over the internet. It is much simpler to promote your event or business through a Facebook post than it is to print a thousand flyers and put them up or hand them out yourself, plus it will probably reach even more people. More and more are incorporating video into their sharing, you have the juggernauts like YouTube and Facebook where most will go, but even outlets like Instagram have incorporated short videos into their program. With all these methods of advertising as well as everyone having access to the internet in their pocket, more and more companies are realizing the importance of video marketing.

Why Video Over Photo?

Still images have their own pros and cons when comparing them to video. Some upsides are that the regular Joe, taking a picture or making a poster and posting the image on social media is much simpler than the effort it takes to film and edit a video. The biggest advantage a still image has though is time; if it is done well, a good image can give a lot of information at just a glance. So why then, would you use video instead? Well there is a common saying in video that if a picture is worth a thousand words, and a video is typically thousands of pictures, then what is a video worth? Sometimes, a thousand words is simply not enough when trying to convey a large chunk of information. Take a how-to video for example, it is much easier to watch a two minute video where you actually get too see step-by-step what to do rather than read an instruction manual, or a real-estate video, where instead of flipping through dozens of images from specific angles, you can get a virtual tour and see the entire house as though you were actually there. At the end of the day video is simply capable of portraying much more information in a single format.
