cmsHey, I wanted to start our blog off with the subject that I know best – websites. More particularly, the programs we use to create them – Content Management Systems. My name is Deivydas, I am the webmaster and developer here at Novae Design Group, and I am psyched to talk about this.

Short History

I was originally taught to code a website from ground up. That required me to design a website on a Photoshop, slice & dice the image, and then use multiple scripting and programming languages to complete the project. An average website used to take about 3-5 months to complete. Shortly there after our society got introduced to windows phones and tablets. That made more people use their phones and tablets to access websites world wide. The only problem with that was that older websites were not coded to be viewed from anything smaller then a desktop screen.

Simple @media queries were added to .css documents to redesign the website for a particular desktop screen. Even though that was a simple fix it still had many disadvantages on a user part.

CMS

Content Management Systems were developed to be more user friendly. Even though CMS’s have been around for a while, they have not been as popular until just recently. One of the biggest pros of CMS is responsiveness. It means that with the help of CMS and its templates (not all), the web developer is able to make a website responsive easier.

There are many content management systems out there. Some big companies will higher independent contractors to develop their own content management system. I have only been briefed on three systems. Fortunately for me, these three CMS’s are the biggest content management systems in the world.

Here at Novae Design Group, when I am consulting with a client about their website, I go through a regular questioner, and then I will decide which CMS is going to fit their needs best. That leads me to costs. Even though content management systems are free, the content inside of them are not. Plugins, Templates, Extensions, Widgets: even though we can find free stuff they will never be as good as premium. Each CMS has different price tag, and each CMS has different purpose. If you are a small company you want want to start off with WordPress. It is the most affordable of the three, and it provides a wide variety of professionally looking templates. If you are a larger company, and do not want to build your own CMS, I suggest you go with Joomla. Its comparably more expensive compared to WordPress, but it provides a wide verity of professionally looking templates and other extensions that you just cant find in WordPress. Lastly, if you are in a profession that requires your clients or patients to fill up a lot of online forms (such as a doctor’s office) you want to go with Drupal.

Conclusion

In conclusion, allowing us to build you a new site from the ground up, or redesign and redevelop your old website, using one of the top three Content Management Systems, will increase user friendliness for front & back-end users, as well as boost security for your site. We would love the opportunity to sit down with you and talk about your companies needs and help find the perfect fit to help grow your business. You can find us by viewing our contact page
