What is a logo?
To put it in the simplest way, logos are symbols made up of text and images that help us identify brands we like. A more detailed explanation would be: a good logo is the core of your brand. It helps customers understand what you do, who you are and what you value.
What does it do?
Logos serve many functions to name a few:
- Makes you stand out from the competition
- Identifies key information about your business
- Builds brand recognition
What are the key elements?
- Typography
- Imagery
- Color
- Context
Is logo a brand?
In short, it is not your brand. Logo design, identity design and branding all have different roles, that together, form a perceived image for a business or product. JUST™CREATIVE
Types
There are basically three kinds of logos. Font-based logos that consist primarily of a type treatment. Then there are logos that literally illustrate what a company does, such as when a car servicing company uses an illustration of a wrench in its logo. Finally, there are abstract graphic symbols such as Nike’s swoosh that become linked to a company’s brand.
Getting started
- Look at the logos of your competition
- Focus on the message you want to say
- Make it clean and functional
- Be aware that your business name will effect the whole design of your logo
- You should avoid using clip art by all means necessary
Watch your colors!
One thing you need to be aware of is color options and unnecessary costs it may bring. Your five-color logo may be gorgeous, but once the time comes to produce it on stationery, the price may shock you. Also some of the mediums allow only one or two colors. Try not to exceed three colors unless you decide it’s absolutely necessary.
